Appendix - LaserJet IIISi Cost-of-Ownership Data
The upfront purchase prices for the LaserJet IIISi and F100 shown
earlier were based on the following configuration. Because the F100
includes 16Mb of graphics memory, we have added additional memory to the
LaserJet IIISi to provide a comparable capability.
LASERJET IIISi CONFIGURATION PRICE
Product What's Ordered US List Price
------- -------------- -------------
LaserJet IIISi 1 x PN 33491 $4,999
16 Mb Memory 4 x PN C2065A 1,196
JetDirect Card 1 x PN J2337A 695
-----
$6,890

Shown below is the depreciation calculation for the printers.
Depreciation was calculated using the straight line method over a 5 year
period with a 10% salvage value for the printers.

Shown below is a breakdown of the costs customers incur for each
incremental page printed on a LaserJet IIISi and an F100. Support costs
on an F100 are divided into a constant monthly support component and a
component that is proportional to the number of pages printed (the
"click" charge). On any printer, many key components "wear out" as the
printer is operated. With the F100, these parts are replaced in
preventative maintenance operations at pre-defined usage intervals
(e.g., the print drum is replaced every 600K pages). This click charge
captures the added support costs for customers that more heavily use the
printer.
LaserJets are designed to minimize support requirements, but not to
optimize cost at high print volumes. For example, the toner cartridge
includes several key parts (in addition to toner) which "wear out" with
printer use. As a result, as customer change toner cartridges, they are
actually changing the parts of a LaserJet that wear out frequently.
However, toner cartridges are very expensive due to the inclusion of
these parts. For a high volume, centralized print application, the cost
of toner cartridges dominates the total cost of ownership for a
LaserJet.
PER PAGE COST BREAKDOWN (Pennies/Page)

Maintenance Kit .22 N/A

Cost-of-Ownership for a customer with a 250,000 average print volume are
calculated over the 5 year target lifetime of the printers adding
depreciation, monthly support, and per page operating costs. Notice at
this large print volume how the high per/page printing costs of the
LaserJet IIISi (for toner cartridges) result in a more expensive print
solution to operate over the lifetime of the product.
